OUR WORLD OUR PEOPLE NOTES (PART 3)

KEY WORDS: Settlement, scattered, nucleated, population, linear,

SETTLEMENT.
A settlement is a place where people have put up their homes.
The place where our homes are is a COMMUNITY.

TYPES OF SETTLEMENT.
1. Linear settlement: This is a type of settlement in which the buildings are arranged 
in a line form.

2. Nucleated settlement: This is a settlement in which the houses are closely packed near one another forming a cluster.

3. Dispersed/Scattered settlement: This is a type of settlement in which the buildings are far apart from one another or widely scattered.

CHARACTERISTICS OF LINEAR SETTLEMENT
  • It is found along a line.
  • The houses are close together.
  • It covers a large area.


CHARACTERISTICS OF NUCLEATED SETTLEMENT.
  • The settlement is found in a considerable land size.
  • There is a center of control in this settlement.
  • There are many houses around the center.


CHARACTERISTICS OF DISPERSED OR SCATTERED SETTLEMENT.
  • This settlement is spread over a large land size.
  • Houses are far apart.
  • This is common in hilly areas.

They came to spread the Christian faith. The Portuguese were the first European nation to come to Gold Coast in the year 1471.
