STRAND 3: EUROPEANS IN GHANA
SUB-STRAND 3:MISSIONARY ACTIVITIES
THE ANGLICAN CHURCH
The Anglican Church in Ghana is one of the oldest Christian missions. It started in Cape Coast, in the mid-eighteenth century, by a missionary called Thomas Thompson. It was later handed over to Philip Quarcoe, who was the first African to be ordained as an Anglican Priest. The work of the Anglican Mission was financed by a group called the "Society for the Propagation of the Gospel (SPG)", led by Rev.Thomas Thompson. By the nineteenth century, the financing of the mission was taken over by a committee of merchants.
THE ROMAN CATHOLIC CHURCH
The Catholic Church came to the Gold Coast shortly after the Portuguese sailors came to the Gold coast. The early missionaries were the Augustinians(1572-76) and the Dominicans (1687-1704).These groups had a  difficult time in the Gold coast because of slave trade and the struggle for control among the European traders. The work of the missionaries came to a halt when the Dutch took over control of Elmina and other coastal areas.Another group of missionaries led by Fr. Moisset opened a mission in 1687 at Komenda. The arrival of the missionaries from the society for Africa Missions in the Gold coast also helped to spread the Catholic faith. They established a mission, led by Fr. Eugene Murak and Fr. Augustine Morean,in Elmina where they spread the Gospel.Their aim was to have an educational plan, because for them " a mission without schools is a mission without future ".
THE PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH (BASEL EVANGELICAL MISSIONARY)
The Presbyterian Church of Ghana was introduced in 1828 by the Basel Missionaries. The early years were difficult. Eight missionaries died within a period of twelve years. The arrival of additional 25 missionaries from the West Indies in 1843 improved the work of the mission. They settled in Akuapem Akropong where they began their work. From there, they set up stations in Odumase,Larteh,Aburi,Abokobi,Kyebi,Yendi etc.The Basel Missionaries were led by Andrea Riis.
THE METHODIST CHURCH
The Methodist Church came to Ghana through the Missionary work of the Wesleyan Methodist church. It began with the arrival of Joseph Dunwell to the Gold coast in 1835.It started with people with Anglican background. Thomas Birch Freeman also arrived in the Gold coast in 1838.He took the Missionary work from the coastal areas to Kumasi. The Methodist church was sent to the Northern part of Ghana in 1910.Paul Adu was then chosen as the first Ghanaian to take care of the Northern Mission.

THE CONTRIBUTION OF THE MISSIONARIES IN THE GOLD COAST
The various missions that came to the Gold Coast did not only come for the spread of the gospel. They also played  certain roles to ensure that the people had a better life.

(i) FORMAL EDUCATION
The difference in the languages spoken by the local people and the Europeans missions was a problem. To better communicate with the local people, they needed to speak one language. They set up schools to train the local people. One of the people was Philip Quarcoe from Cape Coast, who became the first African Priest of the Anglican Church. They went on to build schools and colleges at different locations, which provided formal education to a lot of the local people. Examples of schools built by the Missions include; Adisadel College, Cape coast-Anglican,Mfantsipim School,Cape Coast-Methodist,Opoku Ware School,Kumasi-Catholic,Aburi Girls Secondary School,Aburi-Presby etc.

(ii) CHRISTIANITY: The missionaries introduced Christianity to the local people. By this new religion, they got the local people to change their beliefs and way of worship. A lot of the local people were converted to the New Christian Faith. This helped to do away with some bad traditional practices such as human sacrifice.

(iii) HEALTH CARE: The local people depended only on traditional means of healing with herbs, roots and tree barks. The Missionaries built clinics and hospitals to take care of sick people. They also constructed boreholes to provide good drinking water for the local people, which would help prevent diseases we get from drinking dirty water.

(iv) TRADING:The early missionaries engaged in trading activities in the Gold coast. The Basel Mission set up trading companies to buy crops and other agricultural products, which helped farmers to produce more. They were also able to employ some local people in their trade.

(v) LANGUAGE TRANSLATION:In order for the local people to understand the Bible, the missionaries translated the Bible into Twi and Ga.They also developed the letters of the alphabet for the local languages. This was done under the leadership of Johann Crystaller and Zimmermann. They taught the local people how to read and write the local language.
