 Arrival of the Europeans

1.The people of Ghana lived in tribes and clans before the Europeans came.
2.Each tribe had their own chief or king.
3.These tribes came together to form states and kingdoms.

▪︎The first European country to come to our land was Portugal in the year *1471*.

▪︎They were led by Don Diego d' Azambuja and Prince Henry the *Navigator* the king of Portugal, who helped in the exploration of other lands.

▪︎They called the place "Costa de Mina" meaning *Coast of the mine* because of the gold they saw in the land.

▪︎They gave our people items like mirror, metal knives, clothes, gunpowder and rum in exchange for our gold, ivory and pepper

They came to spread the Christian faith. The Portuguese were the first European nation to come to Gold Coast in the year 1471. The Portuguese named the place Gold Coast because of the Gold deposits found on the land.
