LES PRONOMS DEMONSTRATIFS
(DEMONSTRATIVE PRONOUNS)
In contrast to the demonstrative adjectives, the idea of distance influences the demonstrative pronouns.
Therefore this one and that one will not have the same meaning.
They will have different meaning, and these ones and those ones will have different meaning.
In addition, the gender of the noun they are replacing influences their use in French. They are;
A-Les pronoms démonstratifs masculins singuliers (masculine singular demonstrative pronouns)
They are: celui, celui-ci and celui-là
1. Celui (The one)
It is used for masculine singular nouns.
Example : Celui qui mange est mon père.
2. Celui-ci (This one)
It is used to indicate masculine object or person nearer to the person speaking or the speaker.
3. Celui-là (That one )
It is used to indicate masculine object or person distant or far from the speaker.
Example; J’ai deux sacs, celui-ci est vert ; celui-là est noir.
B-Les pronoms démonstratifs masculins pluriels (masculine plural demonstrative pronouns)
They are ; ceux, ceux-ci and ceux-là
1. Ceux (Those)
It is used for masculine plural nouns.
Example; Ceux qui viennent sont mes parents.
2. Ceux-ci (These ones)
It is used to indicate masculine objects or persons nearer to the person speaking or the speaker.
3. Ceux-là (Those ones)
It is used to indicate masculine objects or persons distant or far from the speaker.
Example; J’ai quatre vélos, ceux-ci sont gâtés et ceux-là ne sont pas gâtés
C-Les pronoms démonstratifs féminins singuliers (feminine singular demonstrative pronouns)
They are celle, celle-ci and celle-là
1. Celle (The one)
It is used before feminine singular noun.
Example; Celle qui vend est ma tante.
The one selling is my auntie.
2. Celle-ci (This one)
It is used to indicate feminine singular object or person nearer to the speaker.
3. Celle-là (That one)
It is used to indicate feminine singular object or person distant or far from the speaker.
Example :
J’ai deux chemises ; celle-ci est blanche et celle-là est jaune

Celles (Those)
It is used for feminine plural nouns
Example; Celles qui chantent sont mes sœurs
2. Celles-ci (These ones)
It is used to indicate feminine plural objects or persons nearer to the speaker
3. Celles-là (Those ones)
It is used to indicate feminine objects or persons distant or far from the speaker.
Example
J’ai des robes celles-ci sont bleues et celles-là sont vertes
E-Les pronoms démonstratifs neutres
(Neutral demonstrative pronouns)
They are Ceci, Cela, Ça, Ce
Ce
It means what /it
Examples:
Où est ta mangue?
C’est la-bas
Où est ton stylo ?
C’est dans mon sac.
Ceci
It means this one
Example:
J’ai perdu mon stylo, ceci n’est pas pour moi
Cela
It means that one
Example:
Les élèves n’ont pas de stylos, cela rend le travail difficile.

Ça ne fait rien
